February 22, 2006Ambassador Scholars Announced
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEThe Booker T. Washington Society announced today that _______ a __(yr)___ at ______________ high school in _______is a recipient of a Booker T Washington Ambassador Scholarship, created to honor the Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary of this great American's birth in 1856. Booker T Washington was born in slavery in 1856, yet he rose up from slavery to become one of the most inspiring and influential Americans of his day. He founded what is now Alabama's Tuskegee University. His autobiography, "Up From Slavery" has been translated into 14 languages and continues to inspire millions today. To qualify for the scholarship, students must attend a high school named for Booker T. Washington and write an essay in response to this question: "Based on your studies of Booker T. Washington, what lessons have you learned and how will you apply them to your life?" Resource materials were available on the Society's website at: www.BTWsociety.org. The ____________Club graciously agreed to judge and select the winning essay from among the applicants at this local BTW high school. The Society awards $1,000 to further the winner's education in science, technology or engineering or for post-high school vocational training. Additionally, each recipient with an accompanying parent, will be flown to Washington DC this year to celebrate Booker T.'s birthday April 2-5, 2006. They will enjoy a River Cruise on the Potomac, tour the National Air & Space Museum, and attend luncheons, banquets, and discussion forums featuring speakers from the worlds of business, science and education.
